Research Guides

Open Access Funding

Welcome
This guide provides information on open access publishing support provided by the University of Miami Libraries. The Libraries have established publishing agreements (some are pilot programs) which provide researchers with qualifying articles the possibility of APC funding. In addition, the University of Miami Libraries manages the Scholarship@Miami research repository which allows authors to publish green open access, if their author agreement allows. Use the tabs at the top of the page or links below to learn more about the open access publishing opportunities sponsored by the University of Miami Libraries.

No Longer Available

The funding designated for covering the Article Processing Charges (APCs) for Frontiers' articles has been exhausted. Thus, University Libraries will no longer approve new requests for covering APCs to publish Open Access (OA) in Frontiers' journals.

The Libraries' OA agreements with the following publishers are still available:

  • Institute of Physics (IOP) — IOP publishes more than 75 journals; University of Miami authors can publish open access articles in IOP journals through 2025.
  • Public Library of Science (PLOS) — The PLOS agreement enables University of Miami authors to publish in any of 12 journals with article processing charges covered by the Libraries; this agreement is effective through 2024.
Publishing Open Access with Institute of Physics (IOP)

All corresponding authors who are current staff members, researchers (permanent, temporary and/or visiting), or students at the University of Miami at the time of submission, can publish open access in IOP journals at no cost to themselves. The corresponding author is the author who submits the manuscript and is responsible for communicating with the journal during the submission, peer review and publication process.

What this publishing program includes:

  • Articles accepted beginning January 1, 2023 will be eligible for transformative agreement funding to enable authors to publish open access with no cost to themselves.
  • Research paper, special issue, letter and review article types.
  • Full title list of eligible IOP journals

*Please note
A small number of journals attach additional charges including, but not limited to, page charges. These remain payable by the authors.
You may find IOP's author guide submitting under a transformative agreement helpful. It is located in the transformative agreement hub.

Publishing Green Open Access with Scholarship@Miami
If you are publishing in any journal and your author agreement allows, you may post a pre-print or post-print of your article in the Scholarship@Miami research repository managed by the Libraries.

For more information contact Jason Cohen.
The University of Miami, along with six other prestigious institutions (Notre Dame, UPenn, Rutgers, Vanderbilt, Syracuse, and Temple), has forged a groundbreaking agreement with Springer through the NorthEast Research Libraries (NERL) Consortium.  Under this arrangement, the institutions collectively cover APC payments for a specified number of articles annually: 693 in FY2024, 892 in FY2025, and 905 in FY2026.

This means that corresponding authors* affiliated with participating institutions have the opportunity to publish their articles in Open Access (OA) format, with fees covered, across Springer's hybrid journal portfolio. Additionally, full access to all subscription journal content from Springer is provided.
If you're a corresponding author affiliated with the University of Miami, you can publish your articles in OA format at no cost in over 2,000 Springer journals designated as hybrid open access. A comprehensive list of eligible hybrid journals can be accessed here: https://resource-cms.springernature.com/springer-cms/rest/v1/content/26538502/data/v3

Key guidelines include:

The corresponding author must be affiliated with UM.
The chosen journal must qualify as a hybrid open access journal (refer to the provided link).
Upon acceptance of any article, authors must opt for open access publication, specify the University of Miami as their institution, and register using their University of Miami email address.

University of Miami Libraries pilots open access support for publishing in Wiley journals
University of Miami Libraries will cover the article processing charges (APCs) for the first 195 Wiley or Hindawi fully open access journal† (submitted on or after 1 January 2024) or accepted for open access publication in a Wiley hybrid journal (accepted on or after 1 January 2024).

Qualified articles must have a University of Miami corresponding author. The corresponding author should include a University of Miami email address in the article.  Research and review articles receive priority for approval of open access publishing support.  Once 195 open access articles have been approved, authors will be required to pay any subsequent open access article processing charges as these charges cannot be covered by the Libraries.

*Please note
This program ends on December 31, 2026 and the number of articles covered for 2025 & 2026 are yet to be determined.
